My first Day as a Physician Assistant Faking it Till Youre Making it
My first day as a real PA I remember my first day on the job like it was yesterday. I was petrified . . . To put it mildly. When I ask other PAs about their first day they often proclaim having had a certain sense of calm. For me, it was pure fear. Possibly, it was due to my situation at the time. I was working as a brand new grad in a National Health Service Corps approved clinic, pretty much solo, in the middle of a very rural community with patients who spoke mostly Spanish. Sadly, at the time, I spoke little to none. The fear that had compounded in my mind was based on a variety of predeterminedscenarios which often ended with my patient either dying or coming very close to it. I had conceived of millions of different horrific situations mostly based on plots from my beloved medical TV shows like ER, House, and Grey's Anatomy. My internal record played something like this: "I dont have enough pediatric experience." "My orthopedic skills are shoddy at best." "I have never actually written a prescription." "Pap smears? Oh boy, as a male PA student I only got to do two during my OB rotation." "Vertical mattress suture? Yes, no problem I did it on a pig foot." "What if I make a mistake and get sued, or lose my job, as an NHSC scholar I will owe 4x my loans, and I will never work again . . . ahh!!!" Hit play, pause, and repeat. Faking it till you're making it For the first time in my life, I was going to have to trust in my diagnostic skills. Doctors dont have to overcome this fear in the same way PAs do. Doctors have a residency to ease into things. As PAs it is just one day you are a student then the next day youre a prescribing medical practitioner. Honestly, as I write this looking back at seven years of clinical experience, it is no wonder I was scared senseless. There is an understandable and probably protective fear that every medical provider should have. That is the fear of harming someone. But there is another fear, and that is less protective, it is the fear of looking like a beginner, having to ask for help, letting your patients down. For me this was difficult. I like feeling in control, I hate doubt, and I pride myself on my medical expertise. But there I stood, vulnerable and scared down to my bones. I arrived at the clinic early this day of course, which only added fuel to my anxiety. I cleaned my workspace (which of course already was clean because I didnt have any patients or charting yet) and I sat there in my chair. Living my dream that I had prepared for so many years. Why did I want to run out of there home to my mom? I cleaned my stethoscope, made small talk with my medical assistant, I re-cleaned my stethoscope and sat nervously awaiting the clinic doors to open. And as the front doors of the clinic did finally open there I stood, exposed, nervous for my patients mostly. In fear that people would discover that I had no clue what I was doing. The Anticipatory It in English Grammar
In English grammar, anticipatory it involves the placement of the pronounà it in the usual subject position of a sentence as a stand-in for the postponed subject, which appears after the verb. It is also called anà extraposed subject. Anticipatory ità tends to place the emphasis on the verb or (more commonly) on the noun phrase that follows the verb.à When the subject works better at the end of the sentence,à anticipatory it is often the best way to go, and its commonly heard in everyday speech and found regularly in all types of writing. Shifting Nominal Clauses to the End Gerald C. Nelson and Sidney Greenbaum discuss nominal clauses in An Introduction to English Grammar (2013): It is unusual to have a nominal clauseà as the subject of the sentence:à That they canceled the concert is a pity. Instead, the subject is usually moved to the end (the postponed subject), and its position is taken by it (the anticipatory subject):à Ità is a pity that the concert was canceled. Here are some more examples: Ità is likelyà that well be moving to Glasgow. Ità doesnt matter to meà who pays for my ticket. Its impossibleà to say when they are arriving. Ità has not been announcedà whether negotiations between the employers and the employees have broken down. The exception is that nominalà -ingà clausesà are natural in the normal subject position: Having a good self-imageà keeps me sane.Living in Franceà was a wonderful experience. Anticipatory It, Dummy It, and Preparatory It Bas Aarts, Sylvia Chalker, and Edmund Weiner sort through more grammatical it details in The Oxford Dictionary of English Grammar fromà 2014. In the first sentence below,à it is an anticipatory subject (the grammatical subject), and in the secondà sentence it is an anticipatory object: Ità is betterà to have loved and lostà than never to have loved at all.I takeà it that you agree with me. Thereà is considerable confusion in the usage of the terms available to describe the various functions of the word it. For some grammarians,à anticipatory it (used withà extraposition) andà preparatory ità areà identical, but they distinguish this usage fromà dummy it,à as inà It is raining. Others use all or some of these terms differently or use one of them as an umbrella term. Examples of Anticipatory It It is a shame that the break-in wasnt immediately reported to the police. It is clear that inadequate resources will have an impact on the care of children with disabilities.à Its no concern of mine what happens in this village, so long as my customers dont quarrel when theyre in here. -- John Rhode (Cecil Street), Murder at Lilac Cottage (1940)It is time you stoppedà working. You are the head of the family and it is right that you should be at home to see that everything is in order. -- Masti Venkateshaà Iyengar, The Curds-Seller in Best Loved Indian Stories, Volume 2 ed. byà Indira Srinivasan and Chetna Bhatt (1999)

Essay about Kant and Millââ¬â¢s Positions on Capital Punishment
Capital punishment is most commonly known as the death penalty or punishment by death for a crime. It is a highly controversial topic and many people and great thinkers alike have debated about it. Two well-known figures are Immanuel Kant and John Stuart Mill. Although both stand in favor of capital punishment, their reasons for coming to this conclusion are completely different. I personally stand against capital punishment, but my own personal view on it incorporates a few mixed elements from both individuals as well as my own personal insight. Firstly, in order to understand why Kant and Mill support capital punishment, we must first understand their views on punishment in general. Kant believes in the theory of the categoricalâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This law of retaliation is taught throughout our entire childhood and applies universally. The golden rule of, ââ¬Å"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,â⬠is just another way of phrasing this law. However, in order to prove the effectiveness of this law, we must apply to all circumstances in a situation. Thatââ¬â¢s when problems begin emerging. Questions about right and wrong, fair and unfair, just and unjust, and deciding who is to be the judge of the problems, are some of the troubles we face. Kant chooses to stick with the principle of retaliation even when dealing with capital punishment. He believes that ââ¬Å"every murderer ââ¬âanyone who commits murder, orders it, or is an accomplice in itââ¬â must suffer death.â⬠(Kant 107) In order for justice to be made, the murderer must suffer the same consequences as his crime. If the murderer is not punished with death, it would not be a fair punishment because people would rather choose to live a tough life than die a quick death; and if this were the case, living would imply a less than equal punishment for the crime. Kant does say, however, that a criminal should only be punished for retribution. Any other reasons for his punishment, such as deterrence, are unacceptable because a human being should ââ¬Å"never be treated merely as a means to the purposes of another.â⬠(Kant 105) Doing so would violate the criminalââ¬â¢s rights as a human being. I can candidly state that I was and still am really smart but I neer accerted myself, Iguess you could state that I was lazy.Well, during the war I served with General McClellan in Virginia. In 1863 I was assigned to thecavalry and shortly revealed dare and glare as an officer. Afterthat I did whatever I could to assist the state and I shortly became General.Well that was a batch to get down I hope that you got it all. Bill: Wow, that was really interesting. What was another aspiration that you had?Custer: Well I was planning and wanted to become President of The United States Of America. Ifeel I would have made a very good president. I would have been the best President that thiscountry had or has or even will have. I was best fit for that position. I am sure you could see thatalso. Bill: Very interesting, well, If it is not too painful can you reminisce the events of that battle, whichwe have tagged as ââ¬Å"Custerââ¬â¢s Last Standâ⬠. Custer: Ahh, ââ¬Å"The Battle of Little Bighornâ⬠. My troops and I were in the Montana Territory. Mytroops were starting to get restless. We were out there trying to round up the Sioux andCheyenne Indians and move them to reservations. I was under the command of General Alfred H. Terry, who was heading the expedition. General Terry ordered me to get in a position South ofwhere he suspected the Indians t o be.That morning one of my scouts found an Indian village about 15 miles away. It lay in the valleyalong the Little Bighorn River. I expected to find about 1,000 warriors. But I later found out thatthey really had at least 2,000 warriors. This group, whose leaders included Crazy Horse, Gall andSitting Bull, was probably the largest gathering of Indian warriors in Western History. Bill: What did you do?Custer: Well I did not want to be found out and I didnââ¬â¢t have the time to wait for Gen. Terry. Instead of waiting, I divided my force into 3 small units in hopes of surrounding the enemy. Alltogether I had a little more than 600 troops. I felt that we could take the Indians easily. One unit attacked and then retreated when it saw the size of the Indian force. A second never gotinto the fight. With only 226 men, I attacked the Indians. In hand-to-hand combat all of my bandwas killed with in the time period of 1 hour. Bill: I am so sorry. I hope you didnââ¬â¢t mind answering th at question but I am sure that our viewerswanted to know what REALLY happened. Ok now, If you had a choice would you do the samething over again and if you would what would you do different?Custer: Thatââ¬â¢s a really easy question. If I had a choice I would go back and do the same thingover again and with out one doubt in my mind. I would change a few things. One thing I would dodifferently is to WIN!!!! It wouldnââ¬â¢t be too hard to do. The second thing would be to do a morethorough job and kill them all!!! Every single one of them!!! Now after that, how can you tell methat I have no heart. Bill: There are two images of youâ⬠¦one of a HERO and another of a GLORY-SEEKER. Whichone do you see yourself as?Custer: I donââ¬â¢t even think that there is a problem with that answer. Yes of course I was lookingfor some glory. Who doesnââ¬â¢t? But that wasnââ¬â¢t my main goal. I wanted to help my country. I feelthat I am a very loyal citizen. I died for my country and I wi ll do it again. I notice that a lot of myfollowers feel the same way. I am very impressed with the monument that you have made for me. I was more concerned for my country than for myself or else I would not have tried to win thatbattle. I am a Hero in my mind and not a Glory-seeker. I feel that we could have won that battle ifit had gone the way that I planned it.Bill: What do you mean, how could you have won or why do you think you lost?Custer: We should not have lost that battle. We should have never lost any battle to the inferiorIndians. I feel that if my secondary officers did as they were told and my superior officer hadhelped then we would have won the battle. Reno, one of my secondary officers, was a coward. He could have rescued me if he had not retreated. I also blame Gen. Terry and his aides for notknowing the size of the Indian force. All he wanted was to have glory, he didnââ¬â¢t care for anyoneexcept for himself. He didnââ¬â¢t love the country like I did. I felt that I was a better officer than himand should have been promoted to a higher position. For all those people who believed that Idisobeyed Terryââ¬â¢s orders it is true but I did it because I was there and I knew that I had no otherchoice. Well if you still want to judge me on that we so be it. Well I have to go because I have tobe at West Point in another half an hour and I have to get some groceries for the Mrsââ¬â¢s. Bill: Thank you for the interview, General Custer. I hope that the rest of your life be long andprosperous, if I can say that. Personal reaction Essay Example
Personal reaction Essay While reading the first couple pages of wild swans, I was immediately amazed by the culture and the perspectives of the citizens. For example, the men valued women with small petite bonded feet and it was said that a woman with large feet would bring shame onto the family. Mind you that so called large feet were what is now a womans average shoe size. Mothers did this to their young daughters. Can you imagine the pain of having a stone smashed on your foot every day? This caused bruising and ingrown toenails which are very disgusting. I cant imagine how men loud have found that attractive. Another thing that caught my attention was how on earth did Change know so much about her great grandmothers life, not only did she know about it, but she described it in detail, and all of her stories seem credible. Changes Wild Swans, has many situations where a Chinese woman was affected by their culture. However, the situation that stood out the most was in chapter six, when Jung Changes mother, De-Hong, was getting married to her boyfriend, Shoo-you. Less than two months after returning from Hardin my mother and father filed their application. But what is it exactly that is really wrong with the environment.. Well, its the people who need to get around using things such as cars that give off pollutants into our atmosphere. The wants and needs of society grow mainly because of population expansion and a growing desire for a more comfortable life. But is the U.S. only dealing with this? Beijing has been proven to be the worlds smoggiest city. The air has diminished so severely that Premier Zhu Rongii and other top leaders have made major cleanup measures. Tiny little vans called an Miandi have been one of the major causes of poor air quality. Although they call for less then 2% of the more then 1.4 million vehicles, they are the sources of 8-10% of the pollution because of their auto gases. The other factors of pollution in Beijing are the restaurants and businesses that use coal to fuel their stoves (Beijing). However, the question is not what caused the pollution but how we will stop it. There are 2 good answers for Beijing. One is to convert the coal burning stoves into stoves that use cleaner fuels. The second is a company that is trying to crack down on pollution called Capital Steel. Capital Steel has been a long time target of environmentalists and by 2003 they plan to spend $100 million on pollution prevention (Beijing). On the other hand, in the US the Environmental Protection Agency has been enforcing air pollution standards on S.U.V.s, pickups, and mini-vans. The effects of these standards are the rising costs of motor vehicles. The EPA had estimated that these standards will increase the cost of cars on average $100 and trucks about $200 (Trucks). There is a problem however, with creating cars that give off n ...

Nursing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Nursing - Essay Example This has become the prime importance in nursing ethics. The nursing profession wants the nurse to deliver the highest standards of honesty and ethics. ((Butts, p. 11) It is important that the nursing profession formulate and adheres to these ideals and do not try exploiting. Nursing ethics usually begins with the cases that they deal with in their daily work routines. It moves around the people that we come across in the health care system such as patients, families, physicians and other staffs. It cannot be learnt in the classes but when the nurse interacts with the patients, this becomes the foundation, and their work begins on ethical ground. The situation has to be evaluated with ââ¬Å"caring, consideration, and a willingness to assume responsibilityâ⬠(Butts, p. 11; Munson, 2004, p. 788).The nurse has to exhibit these qualities and has to help the patient. According to the World Medical Association the Oath taken by the nurse is ââ¬Ëthe health and the life of my patient will be my first consideration.ââ¬â¢ (Harrington, p.102) It means they take the Oath and to maintain this they need to feel responsible and upheld the moral values. Nurses have to exhibit these qualities with the people they are dealing with effectively. The two important ethics of nursing are autonomy and act as patientsââ¬â¢ advocate. The ethical goal also is to safeguard the patientââ¬â¢s information and to build in the trust and confidence. Respect for autonomy: The principle of beneficence can be taken into consideration, which means to take action that promotes welfare of other people. Sometimes the conflict occurs if nurse decide to act in ways that they believe are for a patientââ¬â¢s own good. These actions are opposed to the patientsââ¬â¢ references. The autonomy nature which... This essay approves that the confidentiality of the patientââ¬â¢s information is the prime responsibility and the nurse has to show the ethical values and inculcate the habit of not discussing patientââ¬â¢s information in public places and so forth. Another ethical issue is protecting patients from negligent co-workers and to help them when needed. There is ethical confrontation that the nurse has to go through in the day to day life. But we can see that the nursing education is dominated by the medical profession. The problem with nursing can directly impact the problem with healthcare. The major issue that has to be sorted out is the nursing shortage. Most of us are aware of the nursing shortage and are concerned, as we go through the negative experience when we visit the short staffed hospitals. The integral part of hospitals, nursing homes, home health agencies form the nursing. Nursing faculty turnover is also a concern within nursing educational institutes. The disparity in the salaries between the faculty and the nurse is one of the reasons. The Blue Ribbon commission and the concept of differentiated practice have led to reformation. This report makes a conclusion that nursing is a profession distinct from medicine and it emphasizes on ââ¬Ëthe medicine cures whereas the nurse cares."This kind of reformative and innovative methods brings in the hope of achieving success in the field of health care. When the level of satisfaction of the patient and the skills of the nurse synchronize then we can expect the harmony that can yield positive outcomes.

Cloud Computing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 5
Cloud Computing - Essay Example Cloud computing has the aim of hiding the intricacy of IT infrastructure administration from its users (Bahga & Madisetti, 2014). Simultaneously, the cloud computing platforms offer enormous scalability, 99.999% dependability, and high performance, along with configurability that can be specified. These capabilities are given at relatively low costs when compared to devoted infrastructures (Erl, Puttini & Mahmood, 2013). I present an impression of Evereadyââ¬â¢s cloud services as well as pricing to be employed in the calculations. Eveready has two appropriate cloud computing services. Foremost, Eveready gives the Elastic Computing Cloud service. This platform charges every hour a running instance, and it provides examples with diverse compute power as well as memory (Bahga & Madisetti, 2014). This application meets the criteria for an excellent application in this course. To begin with, I am interested in the application. As an IT manager, I realize that the cloud computing was maybe the single most significant finding this century in my field. As a man database administrator, I am as well intensely interested in the challenges and successes faced by other men scientists. Second, in juxtaposition with EC2, Eveready will provide the Elastic Block Store (EBS) service. This service gives reliable and unrelenting storage with a high IO performance. EBS rates per GB of storage as well as for each million IO transactions. Eveready will also offer the Simple Storage Service (S3). This is a service to provide access via web services to unrelenting data kept in buckets (one-level of directories) together with meta-data (key/value pairs). S3 rates per GB of storage as well as HTTP requests relating to it. Persistent FS will offer a POSIX-compliant file system by means of S3 and is debatably less costly than EBS for largely

Safeguarding Young People Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Safeguarding Young People - Essay Example This research will begin with the statement that the world is changing and so are the people living in it. Every day we are bombarded with news of new technology evolving, new cures for the ailing and progress and research in every field. Unfortunately, the changing world has also given us a reason to fear for our safety. Since the 9/11 attacks on the world trade center, terrorism has become the ââ¬Ëitââ¬â¢ word and our times has seen quite a few examples of terrorism already. The US attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq has instilled fear of attack against all Muslim nations just because terrorism and Islam have time and again wrongly been used concurrently and many times interchangeably. However, the successes and concerns discussed above have all been on the Macro level. It is important that these successes and concerns be judged on an individual level too. At this microscopic level, we can find out lesser issues of life and the little reasons happiness. Scoring a good grade on a term paper might be the source of happiness for a student while family pressures may be a distressing factor. This paper aims to discuss these micro-level problems the youth face in that period from birth becoming young adults. ââ¬Å"Todayââ¬â¢s youth is tomorrowââ¬â¢s futureâ⬠. This adage holds true since children of today will inevitably become important people in the future. Protecting and looking after them is not only a duty of the parents but also of the whole society. Sometime in the future parents will expect their children to look after them, and the society would want that the children take care of the societyââ¬â¢s values and beliefs too. ââ¬ËSafeguardingââ¬â¢ is the term that is used to describe the caring and protection the youth need against the various harms and risks they unknowingly face each day. (Safeguarding, Page 257) The example in Activity 1 (page 257) helps us to discover the concept and meaning of ââ¬ËSafeguardingââ¬â¢. In the example, Carl is described as an outgoing person who hangs out with his friends. He is abused at home so he goes out with some street friends who are of the wrong type and so he gets involved into wrong activities as well resulting in his grades at school to drop. Evaluating this scenario we can say that everybody near him is at a risk of getting hurt. Hanging out with the wrong type of friends may harm the whole society. Being irregular at school and a source of getting bullied also poses risk to the school environment and other students. However a social worker would describe as Carl being at the highest risk. Domestic abuse, bullying, lighting a fire and abusive language are the risks that Carl faces in his life. He might be kicked out of school and since his parents donââ¬â¢t care about him, and end up with his hooligan street friends stealing to live his life and if he gets caught someday, he will end up in prison. This is how easily a personââ¬â¢s life can be destroyed if they are not safeguarded. Therefore it is our binding duty to protect such innocent children and show them the correct path to the future. Problems Faced Children usually perceive their problems to be connected with the broad domains of school, family and friends. These are usually the domains through which the children get to interact with others and learn. Problem such as domestic abuse may lead to pervasive and persistent damage to health. Family and social relationships will inevitably decrease and the child will become anti-social. Getting bullied in school may hamper the education capability of a person and can downgrade the emotional and behavioural development. The child then might just want to hide his social presence and not participate at all in collective activities that are prompted by the society. (Safeguarding, Page 258, 259) (Young People and Welfare, Page 1) It is observed that when young people are able to rid themselves from situations of harm, they make them vulnerable to a different sort of harm that is usually more dangerous. A child, who runs away from home since his father abuses and hits him, might adopt a more passive

The link between the number of carbon atoms in a fuel with the amount of energy it releases :: GCSE Chemistry Coursework Investigation
The link between the number of carbon atoms in a fuel with the amount of energy it releases Alcohols generally belong to compounds whose molecules are based on chains of carbon atoms. They usually contain one oxygen atom, which is joined to a carbon atom by a singular bond. This makes them different to other compounds. The oxygen atom is joined to the hydrogen atom as well as the carbon atom, which makes the oxygen a part of a hydroxyl group. These atoms are generally a part of a hydrocarbon chain. These alcohols can take away water from the body, in which a hydrocarbon chain has replaced a hydrogen atom. Alcohols have a general structure of CnH2n+1OH The aim of this investigation is to see the link between the numbers of carbon atom in a fuel with the amount of energy it releases. There would be a change in the amount of energy given off that is getting greater, the more carbon atoms in the fuel, the more there are more bonds to be broken and formed, thus producing more energy. ââ¬ËIn a chemical reaction, bonds in the reactant molecule are broken and new ones are formed. Atoms are rearranged. Energy has to be put in to break bonds, and energy is given out when bonds are formed.ââ¬â¢ When the total energy put in is greater than the energy put out, the substance cools down (it is endothermic). This is expressed as ÃŽâ⬠+ve (delta positive). If the total energy put in is less than the energy created, then the substance warms up (it is exothermic). This is expressed as ÃŽâ⬠-ve (delta negative). I will investigate eight different alcohols using an alcohol or spirit burner, to measure the energy change during burning them by measuring the change in temperature of some water held by a container. This container must have a value of specific heat capacity so I could calculate heat transferred to it as well. Probably the most conductive container available for use in the classroom is a calorimeter. As well as not wasting energy in the heating of the container, I could also try to stop heat from escaping the top and edges of the container by covering it with a fitting lid. I will try to prevent the wind from blowing the flames to a different direction so all the windows must be shut. HYPOTHESIS More energy is released as more bonds are formed, below is the list of approximate energy required to break and form all bond involved in burning alcohols TYPE OF BOND ENERGY REQUIRED TO BREAK THE BOND (j)

Explain Aristotleââ¬â¢s understanding of the Prime Mover Essay
Explain Aristotleââ¬â¢s understanding of the Prime Mover (25 marks) In Aristotleââ¬â¢s book the Metaphysics, he calls the cause of all movement the Prime Mover (P.M). The Prime Mover to Aristotle is the first of all substances, the necessary first sources of movement which itself is unmoved. It is a being which is eternal, and in Metaphysics Aristotle also calls this being ââ¬ËGodââ¬â¢. However, before he came to know the existence of the P.M he first started noticing the constant changes around him, which led him to question the existence and the purpose of the world, universe and the things around us. He examined that everything that exists was in a permanent state of ââ¬Ëmovementââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëmotionââ¬â¢. By ââ¬Ëmotionââ¬â¢ Aristotle was linking it to the Greek word ââ¬Ëmotusââ¬â¢ which refers to change. He noticed that everything in the universe is in a state of change, for example, the weather and seasons are always changing. Even the human bod y is going through the process of change every single day. Everyday the body changes, we grow old and age, we lose hair and skin cells. This led Aristotle to observe four things: 1) The physical world was constantly in a state of motion and change. 2) The planets seemed to be moving eternally. 3) Change or motion is always caused by something. 4) Objects in the physical world were in a state of actuality and potentiality. Summing up from these four points Aristotle came to a conclusion that something must exist which causes the motion and change to occur without being moved itself and the ââ¬Ëuncaused changeââ¬â¢ must be eternal. Aristotle reached this conclusion by observing that if something can change, it exists in one ââ¬Ëactualââ¬â¢ state and has the ââ¬Ëpotentialââ¬â¢ to become another state, for example, an actual child is potentially an adult and a cow in a field is potentially a piece of roast beef. He realised that if things come to existence they must be caused to exist by something else and if something is capable of change that means it is potentially something else. He argued that behind every movement there must be a chain of events that brought about the movement that we see taking place, such as A to B to C and so on. However, he stated that this chain of events must lead back to something which moves it but does not move itself. Therefore the ââ¬Ëuncaused causeââ¬â¢ must be different and separate from the rest of the chain inorder to start the whole process. So according to Aristotle the eternal cause of motion is theà Prime Mover. The Prime Mover causes the movement of other things, not as an efficient cause, but as a final cause. In other words, it does not start off the movement by giving it some kind of push, but it is the telos of the movement. This is important for Aristotle, because he thought that an effective cause, giving a push, would affect the P.M by the act of pushing and this could not happen because he thought that it would change the P.Mââ¬â¢s knowledge. Aristotle believed the Prime Mover is the final goal of movement that is why it causes things to move by attraction in much the same way that a saucer of milk attracts a cat. The milk attracts the cat but cannot be sai d to be changed in the process. This is why Aristotle believed that the P.M is the source of all motion. To Aristotle the P.M is God (for this essay I will be refering to God as ââ¬ËHeââ¬â¢). Aristotle believed that God exists necessarily, which means that God does not depend on anything else for itââ¬â¢s existence and is not capable of change because He is pure actuality by nature and its nature is good. He never changes or has any potential to change and Aristotleââ¬â¢s book ââ¬ËMetaphysicsââ¬â¢ he states that God is ââ¬Ëa living being, eternal, most goodsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢ therefore He never begins and never ends, and so is eternal. Aristotle argued that the P.M had to be immaterial meaning it could not be made of any kind of stuff because matter is potential to change. So since it is immaterial, it cannot perform any kind of physical, bodily action, therefore the activity of the P.M must be purely spiritual and intellectual. Aristotle also concluded that God only thinks about himself; so he do es not know about our physical world, he does not have a plan for us and he is not affected by us because if He was then it would mean that God changes, because his knowlege would change. He even defines God as ââ¬Ëthought of thoughtââ¬â¢. Overall Aristotleââ¬â¢s understanding of the Prime Mover is that He is God, the cause of all motion and in his book the ââ¬ËMetaphysicsââ¬â¢ he considers God as a leader and in the order of the universe. How far is Aristotleââ¬â¢s concept of the Prime Mover consistent with the biblical concept of God? (10) (AO2) Aristotleââ¬â¢s concept of the Prime Mover and the biblical (Judeo-Christian) concept of God is in many ways very similar. However, they are also very different and varied. Yet both Aristotleââ¬â¢s Prime Mover and the biblical God share the same foundations- they are both eternal and responsible for change in the world. Judeo-Christian God creates the universe from nothing (creatio ex nihilo)à and Aristotle argued that nothing existed before the Prime Mover started the chain of causes. Also the Judeo-Christian God is an intelligent designer who crafts a purposeful world (e.g. the purpose of the star s = light). Aristotle also believed that the universe was a purposeful (telelogical) place: individual objects have a ââ¬Ëtelosââ¬â¢ (e.g. chairs = sitting) and the ultimate Final Cause is the Prime Mover. Another similarity between the two is that the Judeo-Christian God is immaterial because creation is an ââ¬Ëact of willââ¬â¢ and God creates through his word (ââ¬ËLet there be lightââ¬â¢) or spirit. Aristotleââ¬â¢s Prime Mover is also seen as immaterial. It is a spiritual energy and not made of the same physical materials as the material world. Lastly, the Judeo-Christian God is seen in Genesis 1 as a transcendent God. It is the cosmic creator who is removed from the universe. It is an impersonal being. Aristotlââ¬â¢s Prime Mover is also transcendent and immaterial. It ââ¬Ëmovesââ¬â¢ things not throught involvement with them but through ââ¬Ëattractingââ¬â¢ them. However, they are in many ways different such as the Judeo-Christian view of God is that He is in volved with His creation and is personal. For example, the biblical God answers prayers. Whereas the Prime Mover is the opposite because it is a necessary being but one who does not in any way interact and act in the world. It is a impersonal being. Also the Judeo-Christian God is not completely immaterial. In Genesis 3, God ââ¬Ëwalksââ¬â¢ in the Garden of Eden and in the New Testament, God becomes man in the human form of Jesus. This belief is known as the incarnation (ââ¬ËGod becomes fleshââ¬â¢). Jesus walks on the earth and experiences pain, temptation and eventually dies. This is very different to the idea of Aristotleââ¬â¢s Prime Mover who is a ââ¬Ëspiritualââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëimmaterialââ¬â¢ being. So overall I think that Aristotleââ¬â¢s Prime Mover and the biblical God are the same because they share the same characteristics and the reason why is because the Prime Mover idea influenced medieval thinking about the nature of God.

The Effects Of Public Safety On Our Nation On 9 / 11
Things that can interfere with public safetyââ¬â¢s responding to a massive crisis like 9/11 No matter what the crisis is that will call for the response of individuals within the Public safetyââ¬â¢s organization, someone will always find some m form of problem with how they responded to that crisis. One crisis that still bring up questions or debates as how the communication and the response affected our nation on 9/11. One would think that we could move away from that awful day, but it is still being judged, because of the loss of lives, the response time, property damage, and how the community was affected as well as the communitiesââ¬â¢ adjustment to life after that day. We can remove one of those question, because the communities will never be that same and they continuously fear another attack of their city. Life will never be the same after that day, and it ââ¬Å"revealed that we lacked interoperable communication which severely hindered our response time and there was little cross discipline coordination, no framework in place to foster or create the ad hoc or ganization needed to respond to such a massive crisisâ⬠(Renaud, 2012, p. 2). I looked back to Megan and asked in a rushed tone, If you re just going to gape at me could you at least open the stupid door? She shook herself out of her reverie and opened the door. We will write a custom essay sample on Benefits of Educating Employees or any similar topic only for you Order Now Benefits of Educating Employees Introduction With the rapid changes taking place in our world economy, researching the question of workplace education benefits is significant. The question arose whether the workforce is sufficiently educated to compete in a global economy. The research pointed to competency as being imperative in todayââ¬â¢s global economy, which implies an acceptance of computer competency. Education and competency training is defined as more than being able to work, but to make decisions. It is defined as being an important adjunct of technology. Education of skills, particularly computer competency and how they function gave the employees an overview of the system as a whole. It helped them understand how their machine worked and gave them an impetus to look for solutions themselves. This transcended into time saved and increased efficiency. The paper also indicated that companies which supported education in the workforce benefited because their employees exhibited improved self-confidence which translated into increased productivity and performance. More flexibility and a willingness to accept change were also deemed to benefits received from competency and skills training. Next point showed how computer literacy training benefited companies by helping their employees understand the computerized equipment they were working on. This understanding translated into: increased self-confidence, increased adaptability and flexibility, increased production as well as the willingness to take other training and succeed at same. Education and training today does include competency and skills not only in offices but also on shop floors. The benefits to providing workplace competency and skills training to employees are multifaceted. It may lessen the time it takes for people to learn. Return on investment is always of interest to businesses and organizations. The paper illustrated how employees, managers, supervisors as well as trainers observed behaviors from participants in the training, which reflected savings and profit for the organization. Some of the benefits are: saving time, increased production, increased flexibility, willingness to ask questions and changed attitudes. The paper points out how important it is to prepare to evaluate the training at the beginning of a project in order to determine what the organization is really trying to achieve with this specific training. The research concludes by looking at the organizational implications of offering workplace competency and skills training. Education and Competency Training Benefits There has been a great deal of information published on competency training done in the workplace. For example, in the 1997 report, The Impact of Basic Skills Programs on Canadian Workplaces: Results of a National Study for ABC CANADA Competency Foundation, the following information was reported. ââ¬Å"The study consisted of in-depth phone interviews with 86 individuals from 53 workplaces that have had basic skills programs for at least one year. Sixty percent of the individuals interviewed were employer representatives and 40% were employee representatives. â⬠(n. d. , The Benefits of Improving Competency Skills in the Workplace) The following are impacts to the workplace identified by the study: â⬠¢ increases in the quality of work ââ¬â 84% â⬠¢ increased work effort ââ¬â 73% â⬠¢ more competent use of technology ââ¬â 87%. (ABC CANADA Competency Foundation, The Benefits of Improving Competency Skills in the Workplace, n. d. ) Bloom and LaFleurââ¬â¢s (1999) report on improving competency skills through workplace education programs, indicates that ââ¬Å"Although the impact of basic skills training on profits varies according to the value and shortage of a given skill or group of skills within a particular business sector, employers overwhelmingly report increased profits and other bottom-line benefits when their employees gain basic skills that enable them to work more effectively. â⬠(p. 4) On page six of this report there is a list of eleven skills gained by employees who participated in workplace education programs as well as a list of twenty three organizational benefits gained by the employers. Willis (1994) reports that working with employees to expand workplace competency at the Peavey Electronics Corporation the following results were noted: ââ¬Å"all employees had statistically significant increases in job performance with the areas of attitude, getting the job done, volunteering, doing extra, and dependability showing the most improvement. â⬠(p. 25) U. S. Department of Labor (1992) states that: ââ¬Å"A high-performance workplace requires workers who have a solid foundation in the basic competency and computational skills, the thinking skills, and in the personal qualities that make workers dedicated and trustworthyâ⬠¦ (p. 5). High-performance workplaces also require competencies: the ability to manage resources, to work amicably and productively with others, to acquire and use information, to master complex systems, and to work with a variety of technologies. â⬠(p. 6) According to Dr. Harvey Krahn (1998) workplace competency programs target people with very low competency skills; however, if we look at competency as a continuum, businesses will recognize that it will benefit them to develop competency in people at all levels in the workplace. Bloom and LaFleur research (1999) has shown that ââ¬Å"improving employeeââ¬â¢s skills creates employees who work smarter and better and who cope well with change in the workplace, improves union/management relations and increases output and profitability. â⬠(p. 3) The above speak of all competencies being important in the workplace. What challenges arise for businesses if employees are not literate? Bloom, Campbell and Gagnon (2001) speak of competency as being a crucial role in corporate competitiveness and productivity. They talk of globalization threatening U. S. ââ¬Ës economy and of people being a prime competitive advantage in the new economy. They maintain that U. S. ââ¬Ës traditional advantage of having a skilled workforce is being threatened by other countries gaining knowledge and improving the competency skills of their workers. They list the benefits to employers who work to increase the competency skills of their employees as: improved production and income, cost savings, better communication and employee retention as well as improved health and safety. For employees some of the benefits listed are higher income, more job security, less unemployment, improved self-confidence, more opportunities for job training, better attitude. (GAM, 2005) Benefits Specific to Computer Based Training The importance of computer training in todayââ¬â¢s workplace is shown by the following statistics. More than one-half of all workers in U. S. now use a computer on the job. Data from the General Social Survey, on which the article is based, show that an estimated 8. 3 million workers, or 57% of the total employed, used a computer at their main job in 2000, compared with 33% in 1989 (Marshall, 2001, pp. 1-2). Ginsbury and Elmore (1998, p. 2) point out that computer training can save employees time to ââ¬Å"compile and manage large dataâ⬠; therefore, there is more time to spend on ââ¬Å"creative, higher level work that that depends on the quick availability and quick manipulation of informationâ⬠. They go on to say that much learning has been removed from the ââ¬Å"objects of work whether a machine part, raw data or communication. â⬠They speak of workers who fear technology or have difficulty learning new or upgraded technology as being liable to end up at the ââ¬Å"lower end of a professional hierarchy. â⬠Leckie, Leonard, Turcotte and Wallace (2001, p. 1) talk of work ââ¬Å"evolving as the result of globalization, increased competition, the development of new technologies and other changes in the business environment. In the face of these trends, businesses are adopting new technologies and ways of organizing work to attain efficiency and productivity gainsâ⬠(p. 9). They speak of businesses being wiser to retain their skilled employees rather than hire new, technically trained employees. They suggest that computer training can promote employee movement within a firm. Then firms have the best of both worlds, an employee who is experienced with the organization and has upgraded skills. They talk of new technology requiring new skills to be able to adapt to changing markets. They point to ââ¬Å"job rotation, flexible job design and work teamsâ⬠(p. 11) as giving employers the flexibility to have employees that will be able to adapt to change. They point to the effect of technological training for employees ââ¬â if they become unemployed they have an easier time finding a job. They speak of computer training as being able to help employees deal with change as well as help them improve their performance and add to job satisfaction. McNeill (2000, p. 3) talks of computer competency at the executive level, as being more than ââ¬Å"just using email and pulling files off the Web and so forth. We live in an increasingly high-tech world and overnight redundancies have become the norm. Companies that canââ¬â¢t assess these changes can easily get left behind. â⬠He goes on to speak of downsizing and how computer competency is not listed as a reason to downsize; however, firms who have a choice of someone who is computer literate and someone of comparable skills that is not, will most likely choose to keep the person with computer skills. Computer based training attracts many and varied employees in the workplace. Most studies and papers state that computer training is beneficial to employees because it allows them the confidentiality to study what they need without others knowing. For instance there are many computer programs written which teach different skills. Also the training can be self-paced so there is no pressure to keep up. A bonus is if there are computer labs at work, employees can study when there is a suitable time in their schedule, such as lunch breaks, coffee breaks and before or after work. (Rae, Oââ¬â¢Driscoll, 2004) I believe that training and education, especially computer is and will continue to be, very important to both employers and employees. As the information society develops, information and the know-how based on it will become more and more decisive as factors of production. Networking based on the application of information and communications technology, especially telecommunications, is a major trend. As well as creating new ways of communicating and working, information technology has made possible new methods of producing and distributing products and services (UNESCO, 2002, section 2. 1). Technological competencyââ¬âmeaning computer skills and the ability to use computers and other technology to improve learning, productivity and performanceââ¬âhas become as fundamental to a personââ¬â¢s ability to navigate through society as traditional skills like reading, writing and arithmetic â⬠¦ (Selfe, 1998, p. 1). Mark Twains adventure novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay Example For Students
Mark Twains adventure novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay In the words of Pap, You think youre bettern your father, now, dont you, because he cant ? 2. In Mark Twains adventure novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck Finn escapes from civilized society to traverse the Mississippi River. Throughout the book, Twain uses various themes such as social ostracism to comment on human nature and its role in shaping society. Sometimes mainstream society is not as right and moral as it believes, and when individuals try to justify it they push away their own humanity. Twain demonstrates this through the various lifestyles, comparing the intellects and beliefs of different social classes, and Hucks conforming to each facet of society. One of the first instances Twain uses to portray sociological exclusion reveals itself in the contrast of lifestyles. Throughout his life both prior to and after his murder, circumstances expose Huck to opposing ways of life including but not limited to rich vs. poor and simple vs. complex. Personifying middle-class society, Widow Douglass acts as a mother figure for Huck, deeming it her duty to sivilize 1 her adopted son, dressing him well and sending him to school. On the contrary, Pap observes that Youve put on frills and swears to take him down a peg 14. The two family icons pull Huck in opposite directions, but as influential as they may be, Huck knows he does not have a place in either world. If anything, Huck identifies more with the simplicity of Paps natural way of life than with the materialism of the middle-class of society. Willfully shunning both Pap and Widow Douglas, Huck finds a way to keep Pap and the widow from following him instead of moving far enough off before they missed 31. Furthermore, a contrast of the characteristics of men and women presents itself when Huck attempts a reconnaissance mission as a girl in St. Petersburg. Huck cannot go as himself because society would catch him and return him to what he escapes from, but the way men and women live is different enough that they cannot impersonate each other. Although he practices and thinks he manages, Jims comment that Huck does not walk like a girl 41 does not do it justice. Almost instantly the woman Huck chooses to question sees through his disguise, explaining that His last hope in maintaining his anonymity crumbles when he states his name as Mà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬ Mary Williams 44 instead of Sarah Williams, attempting to cover up his mistake by claiming his name was Sarah Mary Williams. After critiquing his performance, the woman remarks that he might fool men, maybe 46, emphasizing the mental, physical, and social differences between the two sexes. They differ in the way they throw, catch, and in the way they thread a needle; the only part of his facade that Huck demonstrates well lies in the things country folk know, such as where the most moss grows on a tree. The way a person lives also affects him or her in greater ways, changing the way one believes as well as the way a person thinks. The differences between people encompass a profound array of features including religion and intelligence. Mark Twain uses Jim and Widow Douglas to portray contention between Christianity and superstition. At first, Huck finds himself surrounded by conventional Christian beliefs and what the widow calls Providence 8, which refers to the Christian God the term providence means the will of God or hand of God. Constantly questioning the faith and the purpose of prayer, Huck ponders its place in his life using the only logic he knows and in the end favors the simpler superstitions of Jim. Leaving Christianity behind, Huck embraces, for example, the philosophy of throwing salt over his shoulder to dispel bad luck and the belief in the ongoing misfortune associated with touching a rattlesnakes skin. .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920 , .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920 .postImageUrl , .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920 , .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920:hover , .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920:visited , .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920:active { border:0!important; } .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920:active , .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920 .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u598d59149b79e50bbfe8a9a1bf870920:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Another form of therapy EssayBelieving that nothing come of 8, there is no room for doubt in Hucks reasoning to abandon life with Widow Douglas for rafting on the Mississippià ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬ Hucks beliefs do not belong in that part of society. Vedic Religion, Mythology, and Society free essay sample
The early civilizations of India have proven to be a highly intellectual, god fearing, and advanced collaboration of people. From approximately 2700 B. C. E to around 500 B. C. E two societies flourished in the northern region of India known as the Indus Valley. The Indus Valley Civilization and later, the Aryans believed by some to have migrated to India from Europe and the middle East paved the foundation of Hinduism through the influences of their cultures, early religions and social structures. Unfortunately, there is little to be said of the earliest inhabitants, the people of the Indus Valley Civilization because there still does not exist a decipherment of the Indus Valley Script. Based on loose interpretations of artifacts found in ancient Indus Valley cities, we have been able to depict that the people of the Indus Valley were originally a nomadic tribe, but later had a high degree of uniformity amongst city development, a language written on a variety of small 1 inch seals, and may have worshiped Goddesses or a pre-Siva God, often seen on these seals with three faces, bullhead, sitting in a yogic position. L Bashmanââ¬â¢s book The Origins and Development of Classical Hinduism, over time the Indus Valley Civilazation began to dwindle because they were driven from their lands by natural disasters, such as the sudden rise in the level of the sea bed south of the delta of the Indus River (Bashman, 1989, pg. 2). Although we have been able to extract minuscule clues from the Indus Valley Civilization, most of Hinduisms pre-history stems from an religious Aryan ancient text called The Veda, consisting of four traditions, the Rg-, Yajur-, Sama-, and Atharva-. It is important to mention that the Vedaââ¬â¢s are thought of as eternal, or not written by human beings, and the Aryan people passed down knowledge of the Vedaââ¬â¢s from generation to generation through word of mouth. People saw the Vedaââ¬â¢s as extremely sacred texts or scriptures and they were verbally relayed for nearly 3000 years with little to almost no change to them. By some the translation of the Vedaââ¬â¢s into written word was viewed as against the religion because traditionally not everyone was actually allowed or able to learn the Vedaââ¬â¢s in early times, and also it was as if physical written words tainted the sacredness of the scripture. The priestly class of the Vedic Aryans, known as the Brahmans, were viewed as the preservers of vedic tradition. They were allowed to attend the various theological schools which would specialize in the memorization of specific texts within the Vedaââ¬â¢s. The Vedaââ¬â¢s were composed chronologically with the Rg-Veda as the first text ââ¬Å"writtenâ⬠. The Rg-Veda consists of 10 books of 1028 hymns praising various deities, guessed to be composed in early Sanskrit as early as 1200 BCE over a period of a few hundred years. The Sama-Veda is a book of songs, all based on the hymns of the Rg-Veda. The Yajur-Veda consists of 4 books: one book is the white Yajur-Veda, and the other three are the black Yajur Veda. Within these books lies vital information regarding procedures for rituals and sacrifices. Lastly, the Atharva-Veda is a collection of hymns and ââ¬Å"magicalâ⬠material (spells, charms, imprecations, and incantations), and this Veda is essentially overlapping magic and religion. Each of the four Vedaââ¬â¢s have a vast number of gods, or devas, being acknowledged and praised. However, within the Vedaââ¬â¢s, stories or myths of the gods are scarcely present; that information was assumed to be common knowledge. All the pantheon of Vedic religion are divided into two classes: the gods (devas) which follow rta, the cosmic order, the set course of nature, and the demons (asura), follow anrta, or anti-rta, in an attempt to overturn the natural course of things. The gods uphold rta, which is essentially moral and physical universal law. Many other gods or devas are deities associated with nature, the heavens and space. The main Devas include Indra, Varuna, Mitra, Nastya, and the minor devas include Yama, Vishnu, and Rudra. The nature divinities include Surya (sun), Agni (fire), Soma (ritual plant), Pajanya (rain), Ushas (dawn), Earth, Moon and Night. The gods are viewed as powerful and willing beings whose pleasure or dissatisfaction determines the course of events in humans day to day lives. If they are pleased they can bless the people with rain for their crops, fertility in woman, good health, etc. and if they are displeased they first punish wrong-doers with disease, and after they are banished to ââ¬Å"The House of Clayâ⬠a gloomy hell-like place, similar to where Hades of the Greeks resides. Of all the gods mentioned in the vedas, most notably in the Rg-Veda, the god Indra, god of war and weather, has a staggering 250 hymns in his honor. Indra is believed to be the creator of the cosmos, for when the demons, led by the serpent Vrtra, came to attack the gods, Indra, strengthed by Soma drink, faced them alone and came out victorious and from Vrtraââ¬â¢s dead body he created our world. Because of this, Indra is mainly viewed as a war leader (Bashman, 1989, pg. 12). The Vedaââ¬â¢s main function were its involvement in public worship, and it were an essential part in rituals. The vedic Aryans main religious practice was promised religious sacrifice on a cyclical basis with the purpose of pleasing the gods and their ancestors. Both demanded praise and acknowledgement so anything from milk, clarified butter or ghee, curds, grain (rice/barely), soma plant, and even domestic animals were all used as offerings to the gods during sacrificial ceremonies (Bashman, 1989, ). There were two types of sacrificial ceremonies: domestic (life-cycle rites, requiring one fire) and solemn (public rites, requiring three fires). The vedic Aryan people used regular sacrificial ritual to maintain functionality of their tribe or cities. The gods were believed to have control over things such as rain, disease, sun, fertility, etc. o the people would sacrifice various goods/animals in their name in order to please them or strengthen them to help them. in order to maintain the functionality of the tribe. Each ritual was an extremely delicate experience. If one word, or one procedure was out of place the ritual was deemed void, and could even sometimes cause harm to the tribe for displeasing the gods. This is where the use of Brahma nââ¬â¢s were vital, the rituals did not require massive buildings or elaborate icons, but only a qualified Brahman who knew all the required procedures learned from the Yajur-Veda. Often they had several Brahmanââ¬â¢s present in order to ensure the correct sequence of events occurred. Rituals were centered around the idea of fire. In rituals the fire god Agni would, via a specific number of domestic fires, receive sacrifices/praises from the people and pass them onto the other gods. This gives Agni the reputation of a rather important god, with 200 hymns dedicated to him in the Rg-Veda. Fire was viewed as a link between the worldly and divine realms (Flood, 2004, 41). Also, rituals consisted one other important act preformed by the Brahmans the eating of the Soma plant. According to Gavin Flood in An Introduction to Hinduism, Soma is believed to be some variation of a hallucinogenic mushroom, and was used to bring the priests to a mystical state where they could see the gods and recite veda hymns to them. Soma was not only a plant used in rituals, but was also a deity (god) and was praised for creating the link between gods and humans. To the drinker, Soma brought superhuman strength, a sense of growing to a gigantic size, and gave visions of the gods coming down to join the worshipers (Bashman, 1989, 14). Soma was also given to the gods during rituals as a strength inducer so they would be able to fight off the demons causing a tribe grief. As stated in An Introduction to Hinduism, rituals were preformed on a daily basis by every Aryan at around dusk or dawn, and also more complicated rituals were preformed at the beginning of the two lunar fortnights of the months (the days of full and new moons). One expensive and important ritual preformed during this period was the rajasuya sacrifice. It was a royal sacrifice used by kings to ensure them a place in heaven during afterlife and also to prove their worth as a king. This complicated sacrifice was put on by the king and was centered around a great stallion (or horse) that would be followed by groups of men for about a year as it roamed the plains going city to city demanding praise before coming back to the main city to be sacrificed to the gods. The significance of the rajasuya sacrificial ceremony was its link to political power (Bashman, 1989, 33). These sacrifices were used to maintain the functionality of a tribe/city and give kings the opportunity to prove their worth to the people, so kings would pay all the extensive expenses in order to put forth these ceremonies. However, the only people that were able to preform these specific ceremonies with perfect precision was the priest class (Brahmans). This gave them a considerable amount of power, and one could argue that it created a power struggle between the ruling class and the priestly class. Nevertheless, all the sacrificial offering ceremonies were a time for rejoicing, not only for the kings who put them on, but also for the entire population because everyone was benefiting. Later in vedic history, after all the Vedaââ¬â¢s had been written, people began to grow antsy with their religion. They started to seek more answers and try to create connections between the meaning of life, birth/rebirth, karma, the gods, and the purpose of ritual (Reat, 1977, 1). This is the period when the Upanishads were written. The Upanishads were a ââ¬Å"secret conversationâ⬠that was only meant to be heard by a select few people, and was the beginning of the emergence of Enlightenment and created the basis of classical Hinduism. Vedic religion is not the same as the Hinduism religion, it is however a precursor to it. From the vedic religion we can see the pre-stages of important Hinduism concepts, such as the connection between religious sacrifice and karma. To this day some people in traditional Hindu and Nepal societies practice early vedic traditions. The vedic religion is overall a polytheistic religion, however it seen being practiced as monotheistic and henotheistic, and in my opinion this excerpt coming from the Yajur-Veda sums up the Vedic Religion: ââ¬Å"O Supreme Force governing the world! You function as per unchangeable laws which remain the same throughout without slightest of deviations. May I also seek inspiration from. You to be unflinchingly principled in my life. Thus I resolve to seek truth constantly by eliminating the false from my life every moment to the best of my abilities, intentions and efforts. May I be successful in this noble decision of mine.
